THE EVENT AT MAREPI
MAREPI – Elderly Care Center is participating this year in Geri Olympics 2026, the Geriatric Olympic Games, which will take place at our facilities in Nikaia on Monday, May 25.
WHAT ARE THE GERI OLYMPICS
The Geri Olympics is an international event dedicated to older adults, with the goal of promoting active aging, movement, participation, social connection, and the joy of effort. It is an experience centered not on competition, but on encouragement, teamwork, dignity, and the feeling that every person, regardless of age or ability, can remain an active member of a community.
THE HISTORY OF THE EVENT
The idea of the Geri Olympics was born in 1987 in the United States, founded by Ted Muilenburg, and in recent years it has been growing dynamically in Greece and Cyprus as well. This year’s event involves the Cyprus–Greece–America community, with the participation of care organizations, municipalities, and local structures.
THE GROWTH IN NUMBERS
According to the event’s data, the growth of the Geri Olympics in recent years has been remarkable: in 2023, 350 participants and 150 volunteers took part; in 2024, participants rose to 1,050 with 427 volunteers; and in 2025, the event reached 2,280 participants and 560 volunteers. For 2026, the community has grown even further, with participants from Greece and Cyprus.
THE GAMES AND ACTIVITIES
The Geri Olympics activities are specially adapted to the abilities of participants, so that everyone can take part safely, joyfully, and with enthusiasm. They include team and individual games of gentle mobility and skill, such as bowling, darts, basketball, target games, and throwing events, as well as other sports experiences that promote movement, coordination, cooperation, and social interaction.
WHO IS MAREPI
MAREPI is a modern Elderly Care Facility in Nikaia, with 40 years of history in the field of care. With a steadfast commitment to human and quality support for older adults, it continues to evolve and implement initiatives that promote active aging, participation, social engagement, and the quality of life of its residents.
THUNDER AND LIGHTNING
As part of this year’s participation, MAREPI’s residents formed their own teams, choosing through a vote the names that would represent them: “Thunder” and “Lightning.” Two names full of energy, vitality, and competitive spirit, expressing the enthusiasm with which participants are preparing for the event.
THE MESSAGE OF PARTICIPATION
For MAREPI, participating in Geri Olympics 2026 is a meaningful initiative with social and human significance. It is an opportunity to demonstrate that care is not limited to daily support alone, but also includes moments of joy, movement, cooperation, encouragement, and connection.
